COST CONTROL?! How much is the "$" now?

You've heard the stories before from your elderly and lovable and sometimes...embarrassing grandparents, great grandparents...ancestors...the works. "Back in MY day...we worked 1 hour for 0.25/hour!"

Now these days things seem so much more different. Back then a Candy bar would be worth no more than 5 cents and higher quality chocolate costs no more than 25 cents! It's fun to think how much we earn now and how much we earned then. Let's take a average person with low rate wages/hour. Now these days (at least in California) it's roughly about $8.25/hour, meaning a full 8 hours would be $66 GASP! Now do that for about 5 days and that would be~ $330 without tax deductions and roughly around (pending where you live) $40~$55 = $275~$290 per week. I mean...show that paycheck to your ancient relatives and they'll have a heart attack :D

Now for a Police Officer who enforces the law, he earns roughly around $4500~$6000/ month. That's about $1285.71~$1714.29/week =F ~drools~

I mean....*heehee* Imagine what you can do with that much money..driving around...handing tickets....NO WONDER THEY'RE SUCH A** HOLES!!! O>e;

Anyways~ I'm such a math nut. Now coming down to this, let's look at the statistics from back then when things were worth like...pennies on a dollar...literally >_>;

Now back during the 1950's wages were about 75 cents on the hour. 8~10 hours of that would be $6~$7.25 per day and $30~$36.25/ week meaning $105~$126.88/ month. Wow...Big difference right? o-o

Here is some exchange rates for different countries in USD

$1 = .72 Euro
$1 = 84.3700 japanese Yen
$1 = 1154.2000 Korean Won
$1 = 6.7035 Chinese Yuan
$1 = Priceless in the Future where Money is ancient

Other than in a few places, (pending more on how much pricing is) You would think Japanese Yen would be amazing and Korean Won just...phenomenal...but the pricing there makes your eyes....just cry sometimes xD

Anyways~ Fun little tid bit for you guys in a little bit of currency exchange and the good ol' history of Minimum wage :P

Chances are I will add more as time goes by but we'll see how this turns out xD

A Retro Memoir Part I

A retro memoir: Part I

Cartridges used to be all the rage back when i was growing up, back then all you had to do was pop in a cartridge and you could play in an instant! (Unless it was dirty, have fun blowing it!).

With games such as Tetris that was bundled with the GameBoy, Nintendo kick-started the hand-held wars and monopolized it for many years to come. But before the GameBoy, there was the Game & Watch hand-held games; each having a game of its own to be played on a LCD screen. Also included in the hand-held, is a watch and an alarm, hence the name, Game & Watch. Sigh..I miss being a kid..Ahem carrying on..Ah yes! The game & watch.

Nintendo aficionados, will no doubt know the history of this great company. But did you know that long before the GameBoy and G & W handhelds, there was Hanafuda cards, playing cards to those not familiar with the term. With that, the point of this blog is to identify which retro games are still accessible till this day and the franchises that are still going strong even after all of these years!

Pushing blocks of all various sizes to clear lines?

Bundled with the GameBoy was the ever addictive puzzle game, Tetris. A game where you had to arrange blocks of many different sizes, line them up to clear lines and repeat. With such a simple premise to a game, it was surprisingly addictive and coupled with the GameBoy's form factor, it could be played whenever and wherever one desires. Yes, even while taking a shit. There I said it! Most Recent Game? Tetris DS. Online multiplayer coupled with the addictive formula of Tetris and touch screen controls to boot = Instant success! and a lot of hours of my life lost..

Eating mushrooms to get bigger? (both growth-wise and Girth *cough cough*) <---DK wrote that, not me... [Image]Saving Princess Peach from the hands of King Koopa while jumping on Goombas and Bom-Ombs? Its all in a days work for Mario, the ever cheerful plumber who goes to great lengths to save the princess. Yes, while the storyline for all of the Mario games are very similar, its charm and great platforming levels is what keeps it fresh. The fact that it influenced other great games such as Metroid and Castlevania, is testament that with great controls and ingenuity, brings more great spinoffs and other franchises. Most Recent Game? Super Mario Galaxy 2. Following the formula of Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, comes another open world Mario game for the Nintendo Wii. And some trippy dizzy moments man..makes my head hurt just thinking about the game play.

Infiltrating an enemy base using stealth?! Awww yeah! Metal Gear (Not to be confused with the MGS games!!!) Mixing tactical espionage and stealth, Hideo Kojima was the mastermind behind Metal Gear, a game that is widely considered to give birth to the stealth genre. Playing as Solid Snake, a special forces operative, you are tasked with the mission to destroy the Metal Gear, a bipedal tank that can launch nuclear missiles from anywhere on earth. If that wasn't enough, the mission entails him to infiltrate Outer Heaven, a fortified state that houses the Metal Gear by himself. (I guarantee you i did no research to explain the game this simply, I'm actually a huge Metal Gear fan). How did this game influence other stealth titles? Simple, just take a look at the Splinter Cell and Metal Gear Solid games, they all share the same similarities in a sense that, stealth is the best option to finish a mission.

Not to mention, while the missions require you to play through it alone and may border on the impossible, you are well armed with a whole slew of gadgets and gizmos. This alone evens things up considerably and when used correctly in the right circumstances, it can turn what may seem like a lost cause in your favor. Most recent game? The epic blockbuster (IMO) Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots;

Set five years after the Big Shell incident, Solid Snake is once again cast as the main protagonist but a lot has changed since Sons of Liberty. For one, he looks a LOT older and almost unrecognisable throughout the game. How did he age so rapidly in such a short period? Advanced Cellular Degeneration, A flaw in the cloning process used to create him has made him aged prematurely. With Metal Gear Solid 4 being the last game to star Solid Snake, its convoluted plot and intriguing story ties all loose ends in the series and its a must have title for all MGS fans. And a tear jerking ending, gosh i cried..and you best cry too when you play it!

Level grinding, saving the world and some douche bag named Cid? (lol jk)

What began as a game to save Squaresoft from bankruptcy in 1987, the Final Fantasy series turned out to be a huge success and it also helped popularized the genre in other countries. Final Fantasy Mixing a great tale and memorable characters, each iteration focuses on a group of characters that are joined together to take down an evil, and sometimes ancient antagonist. Stories in the series frequently emphasize the internal struggles, passions, and tragedies of the characters, and the main plot often recedes into the background as the focus shifts to their personal lives.

Also another staple in the series, is a character named Cid, who has featured in all of the FF games and various spinoffs since the inception of Final Fantasy II. Although his appearance and personality differs in each iteration, he is almost always involved as part of the airship crew.

Final Fantasy XIII (I want to make love to lightning) & Final Fantasy XIV Hahahaha! I am not going to explain the plot of Final Fantasy XIII, because i don't want to make this blog post as long as it is already...But i do recommend the game!

Final Note: The next time you play a title, don't dismiss older games that have ancient graphics and traditional game play. As if it weren't for these old gems, games such as Batman Arkham Asylum, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and Metal Gear Rising wouldn't have seen the light of day.

The internet is full?! Get out!!!?

The internet is full?! Get out!!!?

There's much consternation over the imminent depletion of IPv4 addresses. When i heard Jim Curran's speech following Hurricane Electric's recent announcement on IPv4, there's a bit of a kerfuffle going on.

I'm at a loss to understand why: this is something that has been highlighted for some time and while the estimated date of exhaustion has moved backwards and forwards from time to time. However, all the estimates from bodies such as ICANN and RIPE have recently suggested that addresses will run out some time next spring, although some mavericks have suggested that this December could be the cut-off point.

I can't help but make comparisons with the climate change debate - both discussions are populated by those who hold that we're heading for some kind of crisis point and by those who feel that the problem has been much exaggerated - with all points in between.

[Image]One of the problems with the debate over climate change is that you can never quite separate people's opinions about the scientific evidence with their own personal feelings and, more importantly, personal lifestyles. For example, if you're someone who drives a 4x4 500km every week, is your scepticism about climate change based on doubts on the science or the fact that you don't want man-made climate change to be true as it would have such a profound impact on your lifestyle.

Similarly, with IPv4 address space. If you're in an enterprise or an ISP that has made no allowances whatsover for the fact that IPv4 addresses will run out one day, I suspect that you're more likely to be more sceptical about claims that the address space is going to vanish very very soon. If you work for an organisation like RIPE, say, that has a vested interest in encouraging organisations to be IPv6-aware, then you're going to be more hardline about it.

Sceptics about the immediate need for IPv6 tend to point at the example of the Y2K problem as a disaster that was waiting to happen but, the lack of disasters on 1 January 2000 surely said as much about the preparation work for the problem rather than there not being a problem in the first place.

So, will it be in 2011 when the last IPv4 block is allocated. Talk of the IPcalypse (Ha..i made a funny..) is less than helpful because, in reality, we're not going to be hit by an immediate Internet crash or crisis. But companies who have, so far, ignored the problem are going to be in with a shock at some point, be it 2011, 2012 or 2013..You have been warnned..<3
